British APCO has been involved in eCall since the lead up to its deployment in March 2018.
The RAC Foundation is currently funding independent research to explore the effectiveness of the eCall emergency alert system in response to road crashes. This project is being led by Dr Nick Reed, the founder of Reed Mobility, with technical support from Vesos.
Steve Gooding, Director of the RAC Foundation, sets out the background and aims, and requests support as follows:
A key aspect the research team wish to understand is how emergency service control centres operators use eCall and other emergency alert systems. To do this, they are looking for operational staff in emergency service control centres to complete an online questionnaire – it would be great if British APCO could support our research by distributing this questionnaire to relevant colleagues such as call takers, dispatchers and other staff working in your control centres. The responses will be anonymous, and we request no sensitive or personal information is provided.
The questionnaire is available by clicking HERE and will be available until 28th Feb 2025
British APCO, the RAC Foundation and VESOS Solutions would like to thank anyone completing the questionnaire. Your responses will help us understand the challenges and use of eCall today, to help us improve its use in road safety in the future.
We aim to share the findings of the research with British APCO members in due course.
The research aims to:
- Assess the effectiveness of the eCall system in real-world scenarios. This will involve analysing data from various sources, including emergency service call records, police reports, and hospital records.
- Identify any challenges or limitations in the implementation and operation of the eCall system.
- Gather feedback from key stakeholders, including emergency services, vehicle manufacturers, and road users.
